LYOCELL, MODAL AND VISCOSE - CLEARING UP THE CONFUSION

Viscose, modal, and lyocell are all types of man-made cellulosic fibres made from wood pulp. They’re renewable and can be eco-friendly if produced responsibly.

Here are the key differences in their production processes:

  • Viscose: Produced through a process that is typically energy, water, and chemical-intensive.
  • Modal: Similar to viscose but generally requires less energy, water, and chemicals during production.
  • Lyocell: Produced using a non-toxic solvent in a closed-loop system, which recycles nearly all solvent used. This process generally requires less water and energy compared to modal and viscose production.
TENCEL™ Lyocell: A brand of lyocell fibres by Lenzing, which recovers 99.8% of the non-toxic solvent. TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres are sourced from controlled or certified origins meeting FSC® or PEFC standards.
All our products are currently made of TENCEL™ Lyocell.
